The Beginning
It started so well, suits for lectures, afternoon tea in the Buttery, fine wines and intelligent conversation.
Then, it started to change .....
..... and then it was too late
LONDON 1997
SO HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?
The idea was born over a few beers one Friday evening in a London pub. We would all go to India and Pakistan. When? We had no date in mind. In time this idea would take on a name. We called it "The Big One". But it would not be where we actually started. To test out if and how this would work we decided to begin somewhere closer to home. In Turkey.
The King of songs at Wembley
(Raj) On 25 October 1979 while at Reading Ashok, Saif & Raj get a very rare chance to go and see the Bollywood films legendary playback singer Mohammad Rafi Sahib. What a performance! Will never forget it. Us poor students could only afford the "Blue side circle" seats row G. Which means right at the back. Had to keep borrowing a pair of binoculers from a kind man sitting next to us. He offered them to us first - what a mistake!

(Raj) This picture from the performance was not taken by us but by a friend of mine who had several copies made and gave one to me. Very glad to have it as a treasure! As I long suspected Rafi Ji sang with a smile!
Reading - final year for Saif & Raj
(Raj) Raj revising for his Agriculture undergrad finals in Bridges Hall library. It was hard work as you can see! Saif tried to help by placing a "I must discipline myself" reminder in front of me. As if that was going to help. Raj bolted to the pub as soon as a face appeared at the door and shouted "Oy Raj, time for beer?" But we got there in the end! I went on to complete a PhD in chemistry while the other Ulloos flew to their jobs (Sudsh also stayed to do his PhD in physics).
And here's Bridges Hall
(Raj) Picture taken from the Whiteknights campus lake bridge. Boana, Saif and I stayed there for three years. Saif managed to get a much coveted place in the Self Catering Wing. But could we cook? No! After a few botched attempts at chicken rogan josh we eventually mastered it. "See Saif no floating onions!" Done to perfection after a tutorial or two by our parents that is.

(Raj) It's Ashok, Raj and Boana! A good night out was it guys?

(Raj) Where many a night of fun was had and studenty type of meaningless discussions held after one too many. Nothing has changed to this day!!

(Raj) See above the few hundred yards from where the picture of Bridges Hall was taken from? It was Boana's great ambition for his Hard Rock music to be heard at that spot while he played it in his room. And he succeeded! But please Boana not at that volume while we visit you for a game of cards! "It Gimmi Headaches!" As Saif would tell him. And not just once!
Past technology
(Raj) Saif's first state-of-the-art car. OK it looks a bit dated now but he was the first Ulloo to own one. At that time of course no e-mails, mobile phones, voice messages, CD's, DVD'd, computers, Internet/Intranets, Bookface, Internet banking, log-on's, passwords, log-off's, computer viruses, GPS..... what bliss!
He did it!
(Raj) Raj points a finger of accusation at Saif for one of the many studenty pranks played over the years. "It wasn't me!!!" he tells us. "Oh yea?"
